Hi, we’re Caspar & Tatum.
In September 2020, we came up with the crazy, romantic idea of one day stepping off the grid & onto a boat. We gave ourselves 5 years to prepare but the universe had other ideas, she gave us some hints and we decided to take them. 11 months later, on the 1st August 2021, we became the proud owners of our own home that roams, the yacht of our dreams, Nautilus, our Nautitech Open 40.
I’d love to say that we spent ages looking at what the catamaran market had to offer & test sailing a plethora of sailing machines, but in truth we sat on our sofa watching YouTube & fell in love with the Open 40. Opportunities are scarce when you try to buy a boat during a global pandemic. On paper she ticks all the boxes, performance & comfort. She offers us the open plan living that we have become used to in our bricks and mortar life.
I’m Tatum, a complete sailing newbie and up until the day that we stepped aboard Nautilus I had a total of 9 days sailing experience. 5 of those days were part of my Day Skipper course, which I passed with flying colours, whoop whoop! I’m a water baby (in it, on it, near it & I am in my happy place), I have a profound love & respect for the ocean. As past of our journey I hope to learn more about how we can protect this amazing resource and share my learning with you.
Caspar is an island boy & a sailor, he has many hours of sailing under his belt, most of them on a monohull. So our life on our catamaran is going to be a learning curve for both of us. Casp grew up on the Isles of Silly & is the son of a merchant navy captain.
It’s fair to say that we both have the ocean in our soul.
We hope you will join us for our adventure as we learn the ropes & become salty sea dogs.
We spent ages trying to come up with a name for our blog, finally settling on Watermark. We liked it because it held a bit of nostalgia to when we both worked in media, but most importantly it worked with our ambitions and ethos. To see the world, get new experiences, treading lightly on our planet, to not damage it and where possible improve it.
As part of our new journey, we aim to be as self-sufficient as possible, working our way to living off grid. Generating our own electricity, making our own water & avoiding as much single-use plastic as we can. (Tatum really, really dislikes plastic)
