Currently Nautilus is tucked up for the winter and we’re off seeing family for a few weeks. The is a whole bunch of work to be done on the boat but once that’s completed we’ll be off on our adventures again. The overall plan for 2023 is to make our way out of the Med so that we are ready to cross to the Caribbean around Christmas time. However, that still leaves lots of time for exploring!
The picture below is what we’re currently thinking (but like all good plans, they’re subject to change…)
March is going to be spent sorting out the boat and we may need to pop over to Malta to pick up a few things and have a bit of work done. I don’t think we’ll be doing that much sailing, but expect we’re be really busy sorting things out.
April should be when the sailing starts properly. My thinking at the moment is that we’ll be around the eastern side of Sicily before heading up through the Messina straights and into the Aeolian islands. There is supposed to be a lot of explore there (including active volcanos), so that should keep us out of trouble for a while.
May – At the start of the month we will make our way to Palermo where Marek is joining us for a few days to cross to Sardinia. If all goes to plan, that’s a 1.5 to 2 day crossing to Cagliari. We then have a bit of a quick run up north as we want to meet Zach and go to the Grand Prix at Imola on the 19th May. After that I think we’ll drop Zach off in Corsica to for him to fly home.
Rest of May / June i’d like to continue to explore the Tyrrhenian sea and see more of Italy, Sardina and Corsica. However, we don’t have any specific plans yet.
July we’ll start pushing west along the southern coast of France
August is when we want to be in the Balearic islands. Tates wants us to explore Ibiza and I would like to go back to Majorca where I used to do our annual boys cycling trip. It’ll be hot and busy that time of year, but we should be able to get off the beaten track
September will be making our way out of the med and we want to spend some time exploring Gibraltar. Also getting there at that time means we’re more likely to pick up the end of the Portuguese trades for a run down to the Canaries
October, November, December – will spent exploring and getting Nautilus ready for the crossing (but more on that later).
