Pacific Day 5 – Suicidal Squid

Better safe than sorry...

So after all the worrying about the Tsunami it was non-event. There wasn’t anything we could see to show that the waves were passing through. However, better safe than sorry, as you can feel very small out here in a large ocean.  It did mean we got to cross the equator (again), the 3rd time this trip so far.

Since then, it’s been pretty quiet, the winds have eased right off and my other concern is that the Tsunami may have disrupted the current we were planning on riding. We’re going to keep heading north to try and pick it up again, but it’s a lot less strong at the moment. However, the sun is shining and it was a beautiful clear night under the stars with ZERO light pollution… i’ll try and get a photo at some point.  The sunrise was pretty impressive too:

Stupid squid......

Other than that, most morning I am now cleaning the boat deck of squid that have decided to take themselves out of the gene pool by jumping onto the boat. They seem to have taken over from the flying fish!. It might be that they are trying to make the evolutionary leap to become land creatures so they can take over the boat, but they are failing miserably. I’m still not quite sure how so many are getting onto the deck too…. The problem is they they dry out really quickly and leak their ink. They essentially leave their own crime scene outline as they crisp up …  I thought about putting them in the pot, but i’m not sure I want to take the risk… I feel there is more deck scrubbing in my future.

`She's alive......

One of the downside of living life in a little floating box on a vast ocean is that is does your immune system no favours. So when we find ourselves and the Galapagueños wrapping up warm to stave off the winter chill (28°C) and the island all comes down with the winter bug, chances are high that we will catch it too. And did I just… Unfortunately my symptoms really set in as we set off, so for the last 4 days while Casp has been drinking michelada, celebrating equator crossings and trying to stop the squids from starting a mutiny. I have been sleeping for 15 hours a day, trying my best to stay awake for long enough to give him as much solid sleep as possible and cook us a health and hearty dinner. But at last I’m on the mend after some old fashioned Moldovan witchery, I drank the drink, put things on my feet, wrapped up warm, beanie and all and I sweated it out. So at last Casp has some company, ’cause while sailing two up across a very big ocean is lonely enough at the best of times, doing it with one ill crew member is a step too far.

So not much wind at the moment, but it’s lovely out here and i’m trying a bit of fishing too…
